Algonquin Blows Past Shrewsbury as Poirier, Titans Capture Mid-Wach A Crown

Updated: Feb 16

Northborough, MA – In front of a packed ESPN‑themed student section, Algonquin (13-4) used a dominant second half and a barrage of perimeter shooting to pull away from Shrewsbury (11-7) and clinch the Mid-Wach A championship, 67–44, on Tuesday night.

Algonquin’s offense came from a balanced group of scorers, but senior Dylan Poirier was the clear headliner, pouring in 15 points and repeatedly swinging momentum with timely threes and transition finishes. Tanay Samuel and Brody Faessler set the tone early with aggressive drives and perimeter shooting, while Stephen Earles and Alex Moorehead added punch on the wings as the Titans steadily stretched a modest halftime lead into a rout in the third quarter. Shrewsbury battled behind Anthony Tizzano’s 13 points and the interior work of Will Tonelli, but the Colonials struggled to generate consistent offense once Algonquin’s defense settled in.

The opening quarter lived up to the “classic matchup” billing as both teams traded blows and were tied at 14 late in the frame before Algonquin nudged ahead 20–16 after one. Shrewsbury was forced to juggle rotations when standout senior Sheron Brown picked up two early fouls in the first quarter, limiting his aggressiveness on both ends and taking away the Colonials’ primary scoring options. Algonquin’s energy carried into the second, highlighted by a deep three from Faessler and a late corner triple from Poirier that sent the Titans into the locker room with a 32–25 advantage and full control of the tempo.

Everything broke open after halftime as Algonquin turned defense into offense and their depth took over. Poirier sparked a surge with a steal and layup, Earles buried a corner three off a Faessler assist, and the Titans’ pressure held Shrewsbury scoreless for much of the third, pushing the margin to 22 before the quarter ended. Early in the fourth, Poirier drilled another three and Earls added a layup to make it 64–39, effectively putting the game out of reach. Brown never fully found his rhythm after the early foul trouble, and while Shrewsbury continued to compete, Algonquin’s shot-making and composure closed out a statement 67–44 victory and the league title.
